Can I install and use CFPAS on my home PC to prepare PERs? From the Director Information Management Security (Dir IM Secur) website: ' NO. In accordance with the Government Security Policy and the Privacy Act, DND has a responsibility to adequately protect personal information, such as the contents of a PER. Because privately-owned IS (such as home PCs) are beyond the powers of DND to control, it cannot be adequately assured that the information is properly protected.

Therefore, it is the Department's position that PERs are to be prepared using DND-owned IS or other GoC-owned IS approved to process, at a minimum, Protected A information. PERs and PDRs may be prepared in your home but you must use a DND-owned computer provided for that purpose. When working at home, you must take the necessary precautions to protect the information being handled, accessed or viewed by unauthorized personnel (children, spouses, or visitors). The world is in a constant conspiracy against the brave. It's the age-old struggle: the roar of the crowd on the one side, and the voice of your conscience on the other. -- Douglas MacArthur 'Not a Re@l N@me' wrote in message news:9xm_d.21627$N8.626645@news20.bellglobal.com. Apparently new word has come out, in that you can do so, as long as no identifiable information is used - ie you can do up your points, narrative, etc -->just don't ID Cpl Bloggins.

I still wouldn't do it. Hasler Printer Drivers there. JTQ Nomad 18.03.05 7:05. I would propose that it has been, is, and always will be 'ok' to process PDRs/PERs, quote, 'at home on one's personal PC' as long as the mbrs personal details are only inserted at the end, at work, on one's DND PC. For years, prior to CFPAS, I spent hours (per PER) working on them at home on my Commadore 64 (who has the time during working hours?

(;o>) The idea being that the only thing on floppy, were the textual [narrative] portions to copy-n-paste, then and only then, consolidate (at work) with the mbrs personal details, just prior to finalizing the thing for submission (signatures). Until such time as the mbrs personal details (SN, Name) are inserted, it's a piece of paper, unclas at best, and as such, certainly not subject to any of the policies or acts your have referred to. DND/CF, has for years in agreement with Microsoft and in the provision of CFPAS (on floppies or cd) allowed/allows for the installation of MS Office suite, and CPAS 'at home'; in the former, with the condition that the preponderance of 'work' with these software tools, was just that; work.

[1] While there were intervening polices that forbade processing PERs 'at home', they were IMHO, not well thought out; an overreaction, to something that is and should be very, very simple. The standard disclaimer that any/all IS medium travelling between one's home PC and work PC, be virus scanned on both ends, yadaa.yadaa. * A PER form, on paper or in electronic medium, that does not incl -- SN's, names or reference dates --, but is otherwise completed, is not a PER. Plain and simple.

As such, it is not therfore subj to any privacy protection. Ole ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ CBC AirFarce.- Mar 04 [Missle Defence]. I agree, but let's call a spade a spade.many pers inserted _all_ the identifying info when working on PERs at home because it was easier and faster. The only problem was when spouses (M or F) knew who the drafter was writing on, couldn't maintain some form of confidentiality and spoke out of school. Until such time as the mbrs personal details (SN, Name) are inserted, >it's a piece of paper, unclas at best, and as such, certainly not subject to >any of the policies or acts your have referred to.

I used to have documentation stating this fact (more as a CYA move on my part), however over the years (and moves) have misplaced it. This agreement used to cover not only the home use of MS Office, but also the installation and use of McAfee Antivirus software as well, the ol' 'can't use the software at the same time, at the same place' methodology. Try finding this documentation now and you'll be searching for the infamous needle. Many pers will verbally tell you, but few (read _no one_) will or can provide the doc to back it up. Let's face it, without that 'backup', ie: something to substantiate those _mere words_, MS Office can no more be on your home PC (w/o a license) than say.Adobe Acrobat.
